Party Time!!!

I have been seriously slacking on the blogging lately! To everyone that has been checking every day to see if there is an update, Sorry 'bout that!!

We have started a new tradition in the last few years of having a big party right around D's birthday! He shares his birthday with two of our friends, Lisa and Ann, so this year it was a big one! And, conveniently, it fell on a Saturday!! And, it just happens to coincide with International Talk Like a Pirate Day (no, seriously, it is a real thing!) so we were able to have a little bit of a pirate theme, arrrr!!

We got a keg of Pumkinhead again, and I made a carrot cake for the Birthday people. The kids were very interested in the cake!! It is very interesting how parties have changed, just in the last year! This year's party definitely seemed much tamer than last years, and I don't think it went as late either! It was still a lot of fun though, just not quite as crazy as in years past!

There was a game of bocce, and lot's of good food. And one of the highlights of the afternoon (for the boys at least!) was a game of throw-the-hammer-catch-the-hammer-try-to-hit-a-nail. I am not exactly sure what the point of the game was other than a bunch of guys standing around a log with nails in it, drinking beer and throwing a hammer around. . .they seemed to enjoy it immensly though, so I guess I can't complain - at least they were entertained for a while!

It did get quite cold once the sun went down, so there was a lot of huddling in the living room or the basement for warmth rather than sitting around the fire!!

Sorry for the lack of specifics! It has been a while since the party! But, the moral of the story is that everyone seemed to have a great time and we can't wait to do it all over again next year for Derrick and Lisa's 30th!! Though, I am pretty sure that we are going to try to have it a little bit earlier so it isn't so cold!!

Until next time!

Chunky (or Chewonky) Mustard Pickles

These pickles got their nickname at Derrick's birthday party because Tim can't read very well. . . So I suppose I will have to call them Chewonky Pickles when we finally open Cote's Cafe and Pickle Emporium!! They are more of a condiment than something you eat on it's own, but they came out really tasty. So, without further ado, here is the recipe! This recipe should make around 7 pint jars.
Chunky "Chewonky" Mustard Pickles
14c Cubed seeded peeled pickling or field cucumbers (@ 1/2 in cubes)
6c Finely chopped onions
1/4c Pickling or canning salt
3c Granulated Sugar
4tbsp ClearJel (this is a special starch used for canning that isn't really sold in stores. I bought a bag on Amazon)
1/4c Dry Mustard
1tbsp Ground Ginger
1tsp Ground turmeric
1/2c water
2c White vinegar
1 Red bell pepper, seeded and finely chopped
1. In a large glass or stainless steel bowl, combine cucumbers and onions. Sprinkle with pickling salt, cover and let stand at room temperature for 1 hour. Transfer to a colander placed over a sink and drain thoroughly.
2. Meanwhile, prepare canner, jars and lids.
3. In a large stainless steel saucepan, combine sugar, ClearJel, mustard, ginger and turmeric. Stir well. Gradually blend in water. Add vinegar and red pepper. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring frequently to dissolve sugar and prevent lumps from forming. Reduce heat and boil gently, stirring frequently, until mixture thickens, about 5 minutes. Add drained cucumber mixture and return to a boil.

4. Ladle cucumber mixture into hot jars, leaving 1/2 inch head space. Remove air bubbles and adjust head space, if necessary, by adding hot cucumber mixture. Wipe rim. Center lid on jar. Screw band down until resistance is met, then increase to fingertip-tight.

5. Place jars in canner, ensuring they are completely covered with water. Bring to a boil and process for 10 minutes. Remove canner lid. Wait 5 minutes, then remove jars, cool and store.

We have enjoyed these pickles on hot dogs and burgers and I am sure they would be very good as a pairing for any kind of BBQ!! I hope you enjoy them!!

American Idol!!

The American Idol Live tour came to the Cumberland County Civic Center on September 12th. Deb, Jenny, Kelsey, and I got tickets ages ago! The show was great and I would definitely go again! The screaming tweens were a little much (especially since I am not the biggest Adam Lambert fan, which puts me very much in the minority), but we did leave Margaritas after the show just in time to see some of the Idols getting on the buses. Unfortunately I completely forgot to bring my camera, so I didn't get any pictures!! We were going to try to get the Idols to sign Deb's belly, but we couldn't get throught the throngs of fans that had waited on the corner for an hour!! The music was great and it definitely got me ramped up and ready for the new season of Idol! Who was your favorite Idol last year?

Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day weekend was a crazy weekend that started out with a very nice evening hanging out with friends at an impromptu party! Derrick went disc golfing after work and I went home early! Katie and Jenny came over to hang out and eat yummy pizza and chat while the guys were gone. It was a great evening to hang out on the porch, although it could have been a few degrees warmer!

Saturday was another beautiful day! We ran some errands in the morning and then drove down to Boston to spend the evening with Nick, Lori, Nate, and Lisa. We walked down to the T and went to the Faneuil Hall area. We went to the Bell in Hand tavern which is the oldest continuously operating tavern in the country. There was a huge farmer's market going on in the street next to the tavern, and we were there to see the bulldozers show up to clean the street! The mess that is left behing after this market (which goes on every day in the summer!) is intense! The smell of rotting fruit permeates the air, and there are piles of boxes littering the street - I can definitely understand why they need bulldozers to clean up!

For dinner we walked down to the north end where all of the Italian restaurants are. Most of the restaurants have huge shutters that open the entire place up to the street, and the smells are amazing! It makes me hungry just thinking about it! We walked down the people packed streets looking for a place that looked like it wouldn't be a huge wait for 6 people. We even poked our head into the restaurant that Ben Affleck was supposed to be dining at that night! I don't remember the name of the place that we ended up eating at, but I wish that I did because it was not exactly a pleasant experience. The wait was at least twice as long as we were quoted, and it looked like there were parties of 6 that arrived after us getting seated before us. Once we sat down and ordered, Derrick's fork was dirty and his glass was cracked, someone found a hair in the bread, someone else found a piece of plastic in their beer, and our appetizer order got messed up. To top it all off, once the OWNER of the restaurant came over to hear our complaints she was rather rude and never once apologized for all of the issues. She even went so far as to suggest that we were just vying for free food!! All of that aside, the food was really good, but I am sure that Nick and Lori will not be going back there!

We headed back to Nick and Lori's place for the night, where I promptly fell asleep on the couch bed! N and L just got a new kitten (I am soooo jealous! I want an orange tiger kitty!). He is wicked cute, and he slept with us the entire night! More specifically, he slept on D's pillow for the entire night! I don't know what it is about D, but kittens and kids LOVE him!!

Sunday morning we had to get up early for the trek back to Maine and Derrick's cousin Barb's wedding in Lewiston. We made it home with just enough time to shower and change. We arrived in Lewiston to behold the magic that is the blue tarp cathedral that Uncle Ray and others built in the yard!! It is quite a sight to see, and gave D ideas about how to build a smaller scale tarp building to house our riding lawnmower, cart, and motorcycle!

The wedding was a lot of fun, and it was a gorgeous day! All of the food was delicious, and it was great to spend time with family! Congratulations Barb and Jason!!

After the wedding we went over to Jason and Amy's and continued the party. I continued the party a little too much, because we were supposed to stay and watch a scary movie, but I decided at the last minute that I wanted to go home. Hey, it's a woman's perogotive to change her mind, right?

So we went home! Monday was another glorious day! We puttered around the house and ran errnads and ended the weekend with an awesome lobstah dinner on the porch! Why can't every weekend be a long weekend?

Blueberry Sauce!!!

Although I made Chunky Mustard Pickles before I made the blueberry sauce, I decided that you might like to read about something other than pickles! The night before I made blueberry sauce, I made blueberry jam and forgot to take pictures for the blog! So, you are going to get just the making of the sauce. . .the suggestion for this recipe in the book says that it would be delicious poured over warm lemon pound cake or mixed with yogurt. I always remember having pancakes smothered in warm blueberry sauce at my Grammie Pockets house! However you choose to eat it, I hope that the smell and the taste evoke the same kind of happy memories that I had as I stood over the pot of bubbling sauce!

Blueberry Sauce

7 cups Blueberries
2 3/4 cups Unsweetened Apple Juice
1 Tbsp Grated Lemon Zest
1 1/4 cups Granulated Sugar
2/3 cup Corn Syrup
1/4 cup Lemon Juice

1. Prepare canner, jars, and lids.

2. In a large stainless steel saucepan, combine blueberries, apple juice, and lemon zest. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, crushing berries with a potato masher. While maintaining a constant but gentle boil, gradually add sugar, stirring until completely dissolved. Continue boiling gently while gradually stirring in corn syrup and lemon juice. Bring to a full rolling boil over high heat, stirring constantly. Boil hard for 15 minutes.

3. Ladle hot sauce into hot jars, leaving 1/4 inch headspace. Remove air bubbles and adjust headspace, if necessary, by adding hot sauce. Wipe rim. Center lid on jar. Screw band down until resistance is met, then increase to fingertip-tight.

4. Place jars in canner, ensuring they are completely covered with water. Bring to a boil and process for 10 minutes. Remove canner lid. Wait 5 minutes, then remove jars, cool and store.

So, if you are lucky enough to score a jar of our blueberry sauce, then enjoy! If you are not so lucky - have fun making your own!

Love,

Sarah
